-
- I just picked one up on Saturday. Nice new toy from my kids for
- father's day. Had to order the Kantronics Host Master 2 software
- to be able to do simultaneous VHF packet & HF modes.
-
- My main interest is in working DX. Since I use DXBASE for logging
- and enjoy the benefits of PacketCluster operation while I tune the
- band, I lose this capability when running the KAM+ in ALLMODE.
- So if I want to chase DX on RTTY I can't do both VHF packet and
- HF RTTY (nor Amtor, G-TOR, ASCII, FEC, etc.)
-
- The KAM+ has replaced a PacComm Tiny2 on VHF packet, and it appears
- the KAM is MUCH more sensitive - less retries and it just simply
- hears more & better. On RTTY I don't have anything to compare too,
- but with all the summer static it seems to bw very sensitive, and
- has very sharp audio filters. I don't think it employs DSP technology,
- but it sure acts like it does. In RTTY mode, even when the signal drops
- into the noise, the KAM keeps on printing.
-
- I understand that there are other, competing, software packages out
- there for the KAM+, like KAGOLD, but I have not had a chance to
- review them. Afterall, I don't think any of the programs will address
- my specific need, which is to be able to stay connected to the local
- packet cluster, run HF RTTY from my logging program. (ALERT: to the
- software writers!!!) Maybe someone will address this need in a logging
- program.
-
- Hope this helps & GL with whatever you decide on...

-
- There was an article in March 1994 QST on a charger for sealed lead-acid
- batteries.
-
- Key points:
- 1. charging voltage should not exceed 2.45 volts/cell, i.e., 14.7 volts for
- a 12 volt battery pack.
- 2. max charge rate must not exceed 15% of the amp-hour capacity
-
- I have seen slightly different specs on the maximum permissible current in
- manufacturers' literature from different sources, but the maximum voltage
- per cell will always be the same, since this is determined by the basic
- chemistry of the system. I have specs from PowerSonic which specify:
-
- Limit initial current to 20% of Ahr capacity. Charge until voltage under
- charge reaches 2.45 volts/cell at 68F (20C). Hold at 2.45 volts per cell
- until current drops to approximately 1% of Ahr capacity. At this point
- the battery is fully charged. It can be maintained in a fully charged
- condition by connecting to a constant voltage source of 2.25 to 2.30 volts
- per cell.
